The Catechizing Parents

2 min read
You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. (Deuteronomy 11:19)
Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. (Titus 2:3-5)
For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (1 Corinthians 1)
that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, (Ephesians 5:26)
When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy,  yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away.[b]  As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.  As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty. (Matthew 13:19-23)
We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5)
  1. Catechism at home is often poorly done, if done at all
  2. Yet the forces that will assault your children grow, even from the best intentioned of teachers, youth leaders or pastors, and the media
  3. The risks have risen, with the availability of all the lies of the world that can tailor themselves to the interests and personality of your children
  4. At the same time, parents have become more busy, less well-trained, and often have a poor foundation themselves to begin with
  5. So what is catechism?
  6. It’s an argument against false teachings
  7. It’s a means of effectively teaching so that it takes root
